Laser Links
Laser technology allows point-to-point broadband communications using
Laser Light as the transmission medium. Installation of lasers is
ideal for urban areas or city centres, where it would not be cost
effective or even possible to install cables or pay out for rental
and licencing costs. Lasers may also become more appropriate in high
electromagnetic noise level environments, such as industrial environments,
where data could be interfered with if cabling was used.
The lasers use infrared light as a transmission medium and so because of this the systems do not require
frequency licences and the transmission is not affected by electro-magnetic or radio-frequency interference.
Installation
The lasers are installed in to the most discreet position possible bearing in mind that an exact line of sight is necessary for the lasers to function. Externally the laser is attached to a bracket which is then put into place on a wall. A small box is placed near the laser, housing necessary components for the laser to function.
All lasers are also installed with a radio transmitter. The reason behind this is should an object come between the two lasers, breaking the link, the radio transmitter automatically becomes live, keeping a link up and running rather than having a building completely isolated with no access to the network. Once the lasers are installed, Westbrook Communications Engineers will check the laser units are correctly alligned and functioning every 6 months.
Testing
All our installations are fully tested using a Fluke Networks DSP4300 network tester. The test results are presented to the client on CD-ROM, with a printed summary sheet.
