Networking
A Local Area Network (LAN) is the means by which a number of computers can be connected together to share resources such as printers, files, internet access and telephone services. It is also possible to link two or more separate networks together to form a Wide Area Network (WAN). For example a preparatory school may have it's own LAN which is connected to the secondary school LAN using a WAN. This would enable the two schools to share resources. The various computers can be linked together by a combination of
wired and wireless network technologies.
Wireless Networking
- Laser Link - uses infrared light as a transmission medium to create high bandwidth direct Line Of Sight (LOS) data and/or telephone links at distances up to 5Km.
- Radio Link - licensed and licence exempt free space radio links to create low bandwidth data links at distances up to 20km.
- Radio Network - licence exempt free space radio networks using Wireless Access Points (WAP's) and computers with the appropriate wireless network card.
